Description: BBS & Franz Witte: "New Talent Competition" Tree Styling Friendly Competition! Taking raw nursery stock to 'finished' tree in 4 hours!
Material: 1 gallon Japanese Garden Juniper
Categories by years of experience: 0-5 yrs / 5-10 yrs / Open (10+ yrs).
Cost: $25 for BBS Members; $35 for Non-BBS Members
Prizes for winners in each class will be awarded!
Rules: Each participant will draw a number to receive their tree. They will have 4 hours to complete the process of transforming their tree into a pre-bonsai. Participants cannot be given guidance by outside influences or members. Each tree will be judged (blindly) by members that are not participating in the competition.
Scoring: The scoring will be determined by the following features on a scale of 1-10: Front of the tree, Line of the tree, Wire application technique, Branch selection & placement, Overall aesthetic. Each judge will provide their score and all scores will be tallied. Then the winner will be announced.

Annual Bonsai & Koi Show, hosted by Edwards Greenhouse for 2nd year. Please prep and bring your trees for show and enjoy good company and demos. Please share this event & location with your friends! There is no fee to attend, so invite any and all friends who are interested in Japanese culture. Move-in will be at 8; please be right on time, as it really does take the full hour to get everyone's trees to look good together, and coming late to setup often requires reworking setup that has already been completed. Trees will be on display 9 until 4, and then tear-down happens immediately after the show closes.

Barrelhouse Boise meeting room, from 6-8 pm.
Cost is $20 per person; this covers a buffet-style dinner with side salad, rolls, and soft drinks/tea/water. You can bring a check or cash to the event.
The club will provide appetizers. Alcoholic beverages are not included, but you are welcome to purchase your own.
This is a family-friendly event, so you can decide whether you'd like to have a night out or bring your crew to join you!
Gift exchange optional, with a spending limit of $20, or you may choose to bring a bonsai item you no longer need.
You can also donate bonsai-related items for raffle prizes. (There's a free 2022 membership up for grabs!) Looking forward to some fun and great conversations together!

We will be working through the status of everyone’s trees. Evaluating health and preparing for repotting. For those folks that cannot attend the deep dive class on Saturday we will use your trees as examples.
  • 1st item we will cover is removing unwanted growth.
  • 2nd will be cutting down the root mass with reciprocating saws
  • 3rd removing unwanted/unnecessary root growth and spreading out radial roots (hand tools and chopsticks)
  • 4th potting up the trees in their new environment

CHANGE: BBS Workshop: Deep Dive Potting Class - Bring your Blue Arctic Willows!

Description: This will be a deeper dive into the nuances, methods, and techniques used for this project. We will cover the exact same physical processes as the Thursday class with more detail.

Items YOU will need to bring for this class (Saturday):
  1. Your willow - If you don't have one, you can still purchase one from the club for $20 (smaller) or $40 (large); we will help you get caught up with the rest of the group! We will bring these trees to the meeting, so you can get right to work.
  2. New planting container. You can use a larger nursery pot or acquire one that has proven to be ideal for these trees (Fred Meyer has this available for ~$12) the dimensions are roughly 18” wide by 10” deep see attachment.
  3. Pumice – available at FarWest / OR Perlite can be substituted – available at Steve Regan (https://www.steveregan.com/)
  4. Floor Dry available at Oreilly’s (www.oreillyauto.com)
  5. Bring your Bonsai tools
The club will provide the power tools and Cinder for the potting mix.

Description: Annual Christmas Party. No-host cocktail at 5:30, dinner served at 6:15. $15.00 per person. Door prizes to be given away. This is one of our most popular events, so plan to attend. Jon White Workshop: Creating Stone Pottery, Class 1 of 3

Description:
This will be the first class of a multi-stage workshop designed to help you create your own concrete/stone pottery.
Class 1 - Creating the frame and shape of the container (wire armature, & the building blocks of strength).
Class 2 - Creating the concrete mixture color, consistency & application.
Class 3 - Finishing touches, final colors, textures and sealing of the container.
There will be a limited numbers of members allowed to participate due to high engagement and resources.
Cost is $35 per person (materials included). If signed up, please bring your own stool or chair.
Classes are expected to last until about 1-2 pm.
